Program: Create three new courtyards for young students to create, learn, and experience growth together through interaction.
Design: Each courtyard was designed to have multiple levels and activities for a wide range of ages. So it was important to make playful spaces that were the same scale as the kids who were going to use them. Colored concrete bridges, soft pave material, play mounds, and surface mulch were used to create a variety of play spaces and circulation paths. Large steel hoops were fitted with irrigation nozzles which kids could drive bicycles through a soft spray of water. Curvilinear concrete walls undulate up and down, separate spaces, and offer students the opportunity to sit or balance on top. Curbs were used to retain the landscape soil, irrigation, and mulch, thus keeping play surfaces clean and free of debris. Project performed at and with welcomed permission of RHF.
